The Old Weigh, Pickering: a nod to the past, for tomorrow

by Jared Smith
Located at the bottom of Pickering Market Place, within the same building as Beckside Gifts, The Old Weigh opened its doors to the public earlier this year.

As the name suggests, “The Old Weigh” is a nod to the past — buying just the amount you need — but is by no means old fashioned and is trying to reduce the use of single-use plastics.

The shop boasts a wide selection of locally sourced food and drinks including Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil, loose leaf tea, coffee, flour, honey, and jams. There are over 15 loose leaf teas and 15 coffees which are available to buy in any quantity from a cup to a kilo. Also in stock are eco-friendly products and toiletries — ideal for gifts or for those looking to reduce plastic waste, as well as offering a large household refills range with savings of up to 30%.

Enjoy baking? An extensive range of luxury nuts and fruit are available (in any amounts) for taster-bundles or large baking recipes. A new dedicated gluten-free section has also been installed with regular updates to the range.

The Old Weigh is open from Monday to Saturday, 8.30 am to 2.30 pm and closed on Wednesdays. And just to make life a little simpler, items can be pre-ordered with a delivery service available each day — except Wednesdays — as long as your order is placed before midday.

Owner, James says:

We would like our shop to become a regular visit and not just a one-off trend. Therefore, we have filled our shop with stock requested by our customers. We hope that once you have been to our fantastic butchers and grocers within the town you will then find time to see us and get your everyday essentials.”
