Saturday 20th June, 10am to 2pm
The Trustees and Management Committee of Wigginton Recreation Hall warmly invite the community to join them in celebrating the Hall’s centenary anniversary.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the wide range of activities that take place in the Hall and the wider village. Meet representatives from local groups, enjoy free refreshments kindly served by the Women’s Institute, and take part in a super raffle. A newly produced booklet charting the history of the hall, will also be available to purchase.
On the day, various emergency services organisations will be available, giving visitors the chance to talk to them directly. The Lord Mayor of York together with the civic party along with other guests will also be attending.
Funds raised during the event will support The Firefighters Charity and all contributions will be greatly appreciated.
Wigginton Recreation Hall was first opened in 1926, originally sharing wooden buildings with St Nicholas Church. Following a devastating fire in July 1969, local residents alongside the Trustees and Management Committee led and organised a remarkable rebuilding programme. Such were the efforts of all those involved the Hall was reopened just a few months later in July 1970 and continues to serve the community to this day.
Over the years, the Hall and its facilities have continued to develop and improve. Some groups, such as the Women’s Institute, have been part of the Hall since 1926, while others including the Wednesday Club have been running for over for 80 years.
Today the Hall hosts a large and varied number of groups, including dance, fitness, wellbeing, DIY, baby and senior citizens, catering for all ages and interests.
The Trustees and Management Committee hope that residents, along with their families and friends will all attend this special celebration. Entry is free and all ages are welcome.
