Health and Wellbeing for Active Older Adults and Those Returning to Fitness
After 32 years as an exercise practitioner, I work hard to improve the health and wellbeing of others, especially those for whom exercise is challenging.
I am passionate about exercise for wellbeing and gained a Certificate in Education and Training in the Post Compulsory Sector, a First-Class Honours degree in Health and Sports Studies, a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Evaluation and Research and have been a Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physical Activity and Health at the University of Huddersfield. I have also become an accredited ‘mindfulness for stress’ teacher with Breathworks UK.
After starting my business delivering health-related exercise classes in 2010, including clinical Pilates and dance fitness, I quickly realised that those who would benefit the most were older adults and those returning to fitness. I began designing my classes with this in mind and numbers increased quickly. In 2016, under the name ‘Just Movement’, I began to specialise in working with adults with limited movement and older adults at risk of becoming isolated. Chair-based dance classed are perfect for this group and sessions are very popular—they are the highlight of the week for many attending! As one elderly participant pointed out: “I really look forward to the company and the music makes me feel on top of the world”. With online and in-person classes, we have now become approved providers for the British Lung Foundation and Age UK.
Today, based in Ryedale and semi-retired, I continue to provide fitness and Pilates classes, as well as chair-based exercise locally.
I’m looking forward to many more years of inspiring others to engage in a more active and balanced lifestyle.
