Television House has been part of Pickering’s high street for almost 70 years, proudly run across three generations of the same family. But this summer marks a special milestone: 20 years since brothers Matthew and Nick Wilkinson took over the business on 31st July 2006.
Matthew and Nick, alongside their sister Gemma, have played a pivotal role in the shop’s success. Their dedication, energy and commitment to traditional customer service have shaped it into the thriving, much-loved local retailer it is today.
Matthew has never known another career. He began helping in the shop at just nine years old and joined full‑time after leaving school. “Look after people how you’d want to be treated,” he says, and that simple philosophy has earned Television House decades of loyal customers. As Pickering has grown, newcomers quickly learn from locals that this is the place to go for reliable advice, fair prices and genuine care.
Over the last 20 years, Matthew and Nick have transformed the building itself. The shop has undergone three extensions, adding three new floors each time, and creating a huge amount of space for displays, stockrooms and specialist areas. And they’re not finished yet! Plans are underway for another extension to house an even bigger freestanding cooker display.
Television House stocks an impressive selection of electrical goods: televisions, white goods, fridge freezers, tumble dryers, DAB radios, vacuum cleaners, small appliances, and more. They’re one of North Yorkshire’s biggest Panasonic dealers, with a brand‑new TV range arriving soon. Other major brands include Hotpoint, Bosch, Neff, Siemens, Roberts Radio and Technics. A new addition is Teknix, a high‑quality white‑goods brand offering excellent value. Their freezers feature winter guard technology, making them ideal for outbuildings – perfect for storing allotment produce through the colder months.
The team offers free delivery within 25 miles, covering York to Whitby, Scarborough, Ampleforth and all surrounding villages. They can also install your appliances, working with trusted local joiners and electricians, and if you’d like your old appliance removing, provide three levels of recycling depending on the item. Their in‑house engineer can repair small electricals e.g. recorders, hi‑fis, LP decks, radios and all makes of vacuum cleaners, helping customers keep items going rather than throwing them away.
This summer has seen huge demand for fans, air coolers and air conditioning units, with stock selling out fast. Built‑in appliances are also increasingly popular as newer homes reach the stage where integrated items need replacing.
Television House remains deeply rooted in the community, supporting the local football club and championing other independent businesses. Matthew says it best: “We just want to do things right and keep people happy. If you look after customers, they come back.”
Backed by a knowledgeable team of seven and almost 70 years of family heritage, Television House continues to offer the reliability, service and neighbourly care that make it an essential part of everyday life in Pickering.
