As a family, our annual trip to Dalby Forest to buy a real Christmas tree marks the start of the festive season for us. After a wintery walk among the beautiful trees of Dalby and a warm hot chocolate from the café, we gather to choose our special tree – with the usual family ‘discussions’ over whether an 8-foot tree will fit in the living room or if a 6-foot tree would ever be big enough.
Having just come out of the second lockdown period and now with tier 2 restrictions, Dalby Forest kindly invited us along as guests to receive a tree and experience this year’s tree-buying process.
All open air, the trees are on sale right next to the main car park, by the visitor centre, so there was no need to travel far from the car. A simple one-way system for entering and leaving the enclosed tree area, limited numbers of people inside, and masks – mandatory to both staff as well as customers – meant that we all felt safe during the whole process.
We were very pleased to say that the whole process filled us with the same warm cosy, start-of-the-Christmas-season feeling that it has always done.
Staff with Christmas Tree Expertise
Staff were on hand as usual to offer friendly advice on the type of tree, tree care – and also help in difficult family negotiations!
Beautiful Local Trees
There was an excellent selection of both spruce and fir trees of various sizes (and shapes) available, and, of course, all of Dalby’s trees are locally-grown and sustainable – the money raised from Christmas tree sales goes towards maintaining the forest for wildlife as well as for visitors.
With free parking with every tree sale, there is really no excuse for not buying your fresh Christmas tree locally.
Click & Collect
If you are more happy ordering a tree from the comfort of your sofa, there is a click and collect service available – with 5% off your order.
Christmas tree sales are open 10am to 4pm on weekdays and 9.30am to 4pm on weekends. For more information and click and collect visit https://www.forestryengland.uk/dalby-forest/real-christmas-trees-dalby-forest
We left Dalby Forest as always, with a beautiful tree strapped to our roof rack (hoping that my other half had remembered his knots) and looking forward to decorating it (with Michael Buble) for our admiring family.
