Families Get Active

by Handy Mag

We are Families Get Active, a York-based project funded by Sport England and the Workers Educational Association; (WEA).

We have worked with local groups for the last three years looking at creative ways to get active together. We place emphasis on low-cost activity in the great outdoors. We like to have fun and create an environment where everyone feels included and makes their own active choices. We work with partners in York to deliver bushcraft, photo walks, yoga, woodland craft, poetry, running and cycling events. Our workshops are aimed at people with children aged 5–12 years old but we like to think we can welcome everyone; grandparents, toddlers and teenagers too!

Families have told us that during covid the community support within the group was so beneficial, particularly for single parents who felt very isolated.

This year we are offering urban and nature photo walks. Our tutor brings a lens ball and you can try taking some creative shots using your smartphone or tablet, no photographic experience is required.

On Saturday 2nd April, 2– 4 pm, we invite all families to our ceilidh (barn dance) at New Earswick Folk Hall.

For all of our updates and events, you can visit www.visityork.org/business-directory/the-wea, or maybe you would like to join our Facebook community group (@FamiliesGetActiveYork) to see what we do. Any questions please feel free to contact Rebecca at rrowan@wea.org.uk.
