Ever since the Old Board School closed in 1962 and the Parish Council took over and renovated the building, Huntington Community Centre on the Strensall Road has been offering space and rooms for a myriad of different users from Adult Education to Art Classes, Childrens’ Parties to Pilates, Bridge and Wine groups to Knit & Natter and Calligraphy.
It is used by businesses and organisations such as Citizens’ Advice for meetings, several teaching and learning groups and, at the weekends, for parties as the kitchen area and large main hall are perfect for such events. The building is owned by the Parish Council, is a registered charity and is run by a group of Trustees and a manager.
“Many long standing trustees have, over the years, ensured the Centre is improved and kept up-to-date and the Parish Council recognise that it is a valuable asset for Huntington”, says Gill Chivers, Chair of Trustees.
With its distinctive tower and stain glass window in the main Bellerby Room, it is a landmark building on the Strensall Road as well as being an important resource for north York providing good value flexible spaces to community and learning groups as well as local organisations. There are two meeting rooms which can be set up in various ways and the large high ceiling hall has kitchen facilites and can be split into two rooms. “This space is particularly popular for childrens’ parties”, added Gill. “Off road parking to the rear and being on the number 5 bus is another benefit, not to mention good WIFI for presentations, teaching and learning – see the website for more information www.huntingtoncentre.org.uk”.
Now celebrating its 40th year, there will be a Celebration Tea and Cakes on Saturday 31st October 2-4 pm to thank users – past and present and local residents who regularly use the cafe that is open for tea and coffee 9.45-11.45am every day. Perhaps you were at school back in the day and would like to have a look around again?
“The Community Centre is a unique facility in Huntington”, added Gill. “Without our users, the support of the Parish Council and the dedication of the Trustees and staff in managing the Centre over the last 40 years, we might not have been able to look forward to another 40 years but I am pleased to say we can!”.
