Keep Safe This Winter — Get Your Flu Jab

by Jared Smith
GP practices across Ryedale are working together to plan for the 2020 flu season.  In light of COVID-19, surgeries are preparing for an influx of patients to take their flu jab this year.

Eligible patients from Derwent Practice, Sherburn & Rillington Practice, Ampleforth & Hovingham Surgeries, and Ayton & Snainton Medical Practice are being invited for their flu jab now, with clinics planned to start in early September.  The first cohort of eligible patients include those aged over 65 and those with chronic diseases such as asthma or COPD, or other conditions which can make them more vulnerable to flu.  These patients will be invited into practices first as they are most at risk.  Flu clinics will be running across these GP practices from September.  If you are eligible, please wait for an invitation or contact your practice now to book.

This year, COVID-19 has prompted the government to announce that those aged 50-64 may also be eligible, as will those living in households with shielded patients.  This second cohort of patients will be invited for their flu jabs later in the year with clinics likely to be available from November or December if this government advice is confirmed.

Providing flu jabs is a key service for GP practices and provides a much-needed income stream.  As such, practices are doing what they can to meet demand and all practice staff look forward to welcoming patients back for their flu vaccines.

Managing the flu season alongside COVID-19 will be a particular challenge for GP practices.  Things will look a little different to usual but staff will be on hand to explain any one-way systems or other safety measures.  To help reduce queues, please attend as close to your appointment time as possible.  You can also help your practice to stay safe by following social distancing measures, wearing a face mask or covering, and following the instructions of practice staff.  If you feel unwell with COVID-like symptoms, book a COVID test and do not attend for your flu jab until it is safe to do so.

If you need support getting to a flu clinic in your area, Ryedale Community Transport may be able to assist.  Please contact them directly via their website at  www.ryedalect.org or call 01653 699059 for assistance.  Please note that car parking at practices may be limited.
