Established in 2009, Pure Car Mechanics is a family-run garage at Westgate Business Park in Pickering. Kev runs the garage with his partner Ange and, alongside Ben—who trained as a mechanic at the garage, they have many years of experience helping local people keep their vehicles on the road, including MOTs, vehicle diagnostics, tyres, aircon and more.

When did you first realise you liked to fix cars?
Growing up I liked to be practical, fixing things from push bikes which then progressed to motorbikes. It was a natural progression to cars.
What was your first car?
A Vauxhall Viva Coupe in white.
What is your proudest moment?
Opening the business in 2009 and progressing from there, with support from my partner Ange and the rest of my family. I am also proud to employ Ben who started with us on work experience, progressing to apprentice and qualifying as full-time mechanic.
Do you have a favourite car that you like to work on?
I don’t have a particular favourite, but like a variety as it keeps the job interesting.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Solving any issues or problems with the vehicles. Seeing the job from start to finish and a satisfied customer at the end.
What is the most challenging part of your business?
Time management can be challenging, especially if customers all want to book in on a certain day/date and also allowing time for any emergencies on that particular day. Keeping everyone happy can be challenging.
What makes Pure Car Mechanics different?
We like to focus on customer service and help customers as much as possible when they are without their car. We offer a collection and return service or a loan car, so they can carry on with their daily routines.
What are your three “go to” songs on your driving play list?
I like to listen to a wide range of music and it’s usually when we’re all in the car together, so here are my three:
- Sam Fender “Seventeen Going Under”.
- Harry Styles “Keep Driving” (not what I would choose, however my daughter has the influence on this one)
- AC/DC “Thunderstruck”
Any long term goals?
To keep up to date with the changing technology and diversify as necessary to keep the business moving forward. For example, electric vehicle servicing and the ability to update digital service records.
