Local Student Launches “Move For Mental Health” Charity Run in Malton
10/08/2026

A 19-year-old Malton resident is encouraging local people to lace up their running shoes and get talking about mental health through a new community charity event later this month.

Eve Hargreaves, who is currently home near Malton for the summer after studying at university in Liverpool, is organising Move For Mental Health, a 5km charity run in support of mental health charity Mind.

The event will take place on Sunday 23 August, starting at 9.30am from Talbot Yard, Malton, where runners will also return to finish. Participants can look forward to a few treats at the end of the run.

Eve was inspired to organise the event after seeing first-hand the positive impact that exercise and social connection can have on mental wellbeing.

“After experiencing myself and seeing first-hand in Liverpool how important exercise and connection is for many people’s mental health in combating low mood and loneliness, I wanted to bring that idea back to my hometown,” she said.

Earlier this year, Eve challenged herself to take on the 2026 Manchester Marathon in aid of the Samaritans, despite having never entered a running race before. Through that experience, she discovered the supportive nature of running communities and the benefits they can bring beyond physical fitness.

“Many of the run clubs in the city combine exercise and socialising to support people’s mental wellbeing,” Eve explained. “I really wanted to create an opportunity for people in Malton to come together, get active and start more conversations about mental health.”

The event is open to people of all running abilities, whether experienced runners or complete beginners. Organisers are suggesting a voluntary donation of £5 per participant, either on the day or via Eve’s JustGiving page.

Further details can be found on Eve’s Instagram account, @eveinthepool, which includes a link to the event WhatsApp group.

Eve hopes the run will help bring the local community together while raising both funds and awareness for mental health support.

Anyone interested in taking part is invited to come along and join the event on the day.
