Malton School is Finalist in Music & Drama Education Awards 2024

Malton School is delighted that its Drama Department has been shortlisted as a finalist in the category of Outstanding School Drama Department in the Music & Drama Education Awards 2024.

The Awards celebrate the extraordinary contribution made by professionals, schools, companies, charities and organisations to the lives of others through the medium of Music and Drama.  The judges in the category for Outstanding School Drama Department are looking for an exemplary team which goes above and beyond in the pursuit of excellence in drama provision.  They will be looking for evidence that drama provision is exceptional, and that staff go out of their way to ensure that a significant proportion of students benefit from access to drama and theatre opportunities in and out of school.

Malton School’s Drama Department has been shortlisted because of its drive to support students, especially those in the Sixth Form who are often keen to take their next steps in the creative and performance industries, by offering them exposure to as many experiences as possible, experiences that may not otherwise be as easy to access living in a rural, market town.

Through the enthusiasm and passion of the faculty members and their drive for excellence, they have more than tripled the number of students taking GCSE Drama in Year 10 and increased 7-fold the number of students registered for the level 3 CTEC in Performing Arts.

The team has also worked incredibly hard to improve the facilities the school is able to offer, through grant funding and additional funding available through bodies like the school’s PTA and Endowment Governors, and now boasts a traditional proscenium arch theatre, a flexible black box performance space with full DMX lighting rig, as well as a design space with costume, props and set storage facilities.  Additionally, they have forged partnerships locally through opportunities such as funding an Artist in Residence, working with a locally based professional voice coach and singing teacher, developing a Practitioner Programme, in collaboration with the ACE Bridge Organisation IVE, offering workshops and masterclasses with industry professionals.  After an initial and highly successful year, this programme will now extend for a further 5 years.

The result of this hard work is not only visible in the results – nearly 88% of CTEC students achieve a Distinction * and 50% of GCSE students achieve a 7-9 (equivalent to an A** to B), but also the sheer number of invitations students and the school receive to participate in local events.  Last year students took part in Malton Show, Meadowfest and ‘Magnificent Women’, a local event celebrating International Women’s Day, amongst others.

Assistant Headteacher, Helen Wilson, who line manages the Performing Arts Faculty acknowledged the tremendous amount of work put in by the team over recent years, saying “To be short-listed for this award is a very well-deserved achievement for the team. I know just how much faculty members put in to continuously drive forward and improve the offering to our students.”

Jo Harmon, Head of Performance and Creative is also thrilled by the team’s success.  Commenting on the short-listing she said, “The team is trying to lead the way in offering students a programme that will enrich their learning and support their pathway through Malton School and beyond to enable them to achieve their dreams.  I am delighted that they have been short-listed for this award which recognises the many additional hours they have put in to both provide opportunities for students but also ensure their own continual personal development.”

The department will find out at the Awards Ceremony on 22 February next year at the London Marriott Hotel whether they have been successful.  Other finalists in the category include Beaumont School, Chiswick School, ClassAction (Godalming Sixth Form College) and Wellington College.  We wish all the short-listed schools all the very best.
