Marie Curie — Help Us Care This Christmas

by Jared Smith

We wish we could put normal life back on for dying people, and those left behind. But we can’t. We’re hopeful that life may start up again soon. But for people with a terminal diagnosis, and families devastated by loss, there’s no going back.

Our nurses, hospices and Support Line have been here through it all, day and night, 7 days a week, caring for people with and without coronavirus. Your ongoing support is enabling our front-line staff to continue providing vital nursing care across Ryedale, as well as making sure people have access to a wide range of Information and Support Services, via the phone and online.

So many of you have stood by us during 2020 and we can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done. But truthfully the pandemic has had a devastating impact on our fundraising and we continue to face a significant loss of income. With most of our usual fundraising activities on hold, we urgently need help to pay for the Ryedale nursing service this Christmas.

Ways you can help this Christmas

Cash Not Cards — Could you make a small donation instead of buying Christmas cards this year?

Add us to your Christmas list — When you make your list of who to buy presents for this year, could you add Marie Curie to the list? From £2 to pay for a glass of wine for a patient on Christmas Eve to £28 for a physiotherapist to assess and treat a patient for an hour or £41 to kit out a Marie Curie Nurse, so they’re ready to face anything with a smile and the sense of pride that their uniform brings, we are grateful for any gift you can make.

Virtual collections — Usually you would have spotted us and our wonderful collectors out in shops and high streets with our yellow Christmas hats on and a collection tin in hand but our Christmas collections are cancelled this year. Instead, we’re holding a virtual collection and you can give a small donation with just a click! To donate or find out more please visit

We are so proud that our nurses have continued to provide unwavering support across York and to the North Yorkshire community throughout the pandemic, crucially relieving pressure off the overloaded NHS. Between April and September our nurses made 2,598 visits across North Yorkshire, providing 10,672 hours of bespoke care. Each visit is to an individual with their own preferences, someone who deserves to be treated with the upmost respect and dignity at the end of their life. Our nurses ensure this is the case.

This is our vision for everyone facing terminal illness. Through the winter months our nurses will continue to make these visits to people across York and North Yorkshire. Every day it costs approximately £1,158 to keep the North Yorkshire nursing service running and with our fundraising largely on hold, we need your help. Amidst the uncertainty of this time, Marie Curie services provide stability for the local community. Please help us to continue our vital work.
