Joseph Rowntree Theatre Company’s Summer Concert – Unique and Out of this Universe!

Thursday 29th & Friday 30th June 2023, 7.30pm

**All profits raising money for the Joseph Rowntree Theatre**

Hot on the heels of their hugely successful production of Hello, Dolly!, Joseph Rowntree Theatre Company (JRTC) is back with their most ambitious summer concert ever! Musicals in the Multiverse will be an exciting evening of musical theatre favourites with a twist. In the parallel universes of this musical multiverse, you’ll hear the songs that you know and love – but with their traditional presentation turned on its head. This means gender swaps, minor to major key swaps, musical style swaps and more! Featuring a cast of 36, including some of the best talent York has to offer, the JRTC is delighted to invite the Yorkshire community to this epic show.

Why this show?

The concept of the show came from a conversation amongst JRTC members about songs they would love to sing but would never get the opportunity to in a fully-staged musical production; for example, due to the gender, age etc of the character in the original setting. The JRTC prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming artistic space for all. The concept for this show allows our wonderfully talented and diverse cast to perform songs that explore and celebrate who they are, to push some of the traditional musical theatre boundaries and ultimately honour some of the best musical songs ever written.

What to expect

Musicals in the Multiverse features a 36-strong cast and a 5-piece band performing a mixture of solos, duets, small group and full ensemble numbers. As well as showstopping songs from a whole cast bursting with vocal talent, our strong core of dancers will perform several spectacular featured dance numbers. Every song in the show will have at least one twist, which could include gender swaps, minor/major key swaps, era or musical genre swaps… expect the unexpected in the multiverse!

Who are JRTC?

The Joseph Rowntree Theatre Company was established in 2017 to raise funds for the maintenance and development of the Joseph Rowntree Theatre while entertaining audiences with innovative new productions of both classic and contemporary musicals. Our most recent production of Hello, Dolly! received standing ovations at every performance and raised over £5,000 for the Joseph Rowntree Theatre (JRT). Since the company launched with The Producers in February 2018, we have raised over £28,000 for the JRT and we hope Musicals in the Multiverse will add to this impressive total..

About the Joseph Rowntree Theatre

The Joseph Rowntree Theatre is a registered charity serving the people of York and North Yorkshire. A Grade II listed theatre, it was built by the Rowntree Village Trust in 1935. It is the only remaining Rowntree building still used for its original purpose – a place for recreation and entertainment. Today, a volunteer board of 13 trustees manages the theatre, supported by over 170 volunteers working across all areas, from stage crew to box office, fundraising and marketing. The theatre is evolving into a vibrant community hub and creating new and exciting opportunities for more local people to get involved. We have a clear vision, to be an inspiring space for performing arts and other entertainment for the York and wider Yorkshire community.
