August 2021 Winner • Alex Anthony Wilford // “Howsham Mill”

Alex’s entry is, to our minds, a definitive image of a local landmark—the 18th Century Howsham Bridge.

Converted to black and white, the image draws attention to the bridge’s impressive substructure, the shadows created by which are contrasted beautifully with the bright, cloudy summer sky.

August 21 Runner-Up • Nick Fletcher // “Hole of Horcum”

Local legend has it that the Hole of Horcum was formed when Wade the Giant grabbed a handful of dirt to throw at his wife Bell.

Though this tale is tenuous, there is no doubt that Nick’s photo, featuring discrete, vibrant layers of purple, green, and blue, captures the landscape wonderfully.
