First market Sunday 17th March
With traditional market stalls outside and smaller stalls indoors, the market will host an array of local, independent traders selling a variety of goods; including food, locally grown fruit and vegetables, crafts and textiles, pet products and much more.
Louise Chandler, who lives and runs a local business in the village, came up with the idea of having a regular village market after seeing the success of other markets in other local areas. After testing the waters by putting an advert in the village newsletter, a group of 11 villagers with a variety of ages and backgrounds, along with Louise as Chair, have worked together as the village market committee to organise and promote the new Sheriff Hutton Village Market.
The market aims to benefit local causes, projects and organisations in two ways. Firstly, any funds raised from stallholder fees after costs are covered will be distributed amongst local projects and organisations. Secondly, refreshments will be provided in the Village Hall on market days and the committee are encouraging local clubs and groups to take turns in providing the refreshments allowing them to raise money to benefit their groups.
Aside from the benefit, they hope to provide for voluntary groups and projects within the village, the committee also hopes the markets will help to enhance community spirit. They are very keen for the whole village to embrace this new idea and hope that the monthly markets will become a regular part of village life.
The first market will be held on Sunday 17th March at Sheriff Hutton Village Hall, York Road, Sheriff Hutton, York YO60 6RA. There will be stalls inside and outside the village hall, and the market will run from 10.30am to 1.30pm.
