We spoke with Mark about the estate agency he has run for over 21 years, what keeps him motivated, and his hopes for the future.
What made you start the business?
I’ve been an Estate Agent for the last 37 years and, having experienced working within larger corporate companies, I always felt that a more personal service from a local family-run business was a better fit for our local area.
What is your proudest moment?
I have a few! Obviously my children. But I think it would probably have to be the opening of our first office in Malton 21 years ago, and then in Pickering in 2009. The years have flown by and we’re still going strong!
What do you love about helping people sell their home?
Selling and buying properties can be one of the most stressful experiences. Being able to help someone navigate the process is a privilege. I aim to bring a clear head and some calm to any situation, along with a wealth of experience. I relish the challenge!
The housing market presents many challenges and we take great pride in helping people through the process of selling their property and moving, making it as smooth as possible.
What do you like doing in your spare time?
I like nothing better than spending time with my family and watching my sons play cricket and rugby.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
Ryedale of course! We live in the village of Burythorpe which has a fantastic community, a great local pub and the rolling Yorkshire Wolds on our doorstep—what’s not to love!
Further afield, I have a great fondness for the Austrian Alps where we have spent time skiing in the winter and walking in the summer: beautiful tranquil countryside.
What makes a good estate agent?
For me it would be completely transparency. Being a good listener, realistic and proactive—someone who never gives up and keeps their promises. That’s the ethos of our family-run business.
What does the future hold for Mark Stephenson’s Estate Agents?
Hopefully the next generation of Stephensons! I was delighted when our eldest son Jacob joined the business two years ago. He brings with him youth, fresh ideas and a willingness to learn. I very much hope he stays with us and moves the business forward for many more years to come.
What’s the main advice you’d give to someone looking to sell their home?
Find an estate agent you can trust and who has good experience of the local market. My other advice would be to check the current mortgage deals and consider the total cost of selling your home including solicitors and removals. And when your house does go on the market, make sure that it is looking at its absolute best. Your property matters to us and we are always at the end of the phone for help and advice.
