The Gondoliers

22 – 26th October 2019

York Opera has a rich history dating back to 1967 and each year produce a number of operas, operettas and concerts, with singers from all over Yorkshire and far beyond.

The Gondoliers was first performed in 1889 and was an instant success – so much so that it received the honour of a private performance in 1891 in Windsor Castle in the presence of Queen Victoria.

Set in Venice and the ‘Kingdom of Barataria’, it is full of visual and musical colour, wonderful melodies and lively dances. Gilbert’s libretto is as witty as ever on the subjects of republicanism and equality, and Sullivan’s music sparkles with warmth and good humour.

Outstanding numbers abound: Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes, A Regular Royal Queen, When a Merry Maiden Marries, the delightful Gavotte and the famous Cachucha – to name but a few.

Tickets available from York Theatre Royal box office on 01904 623568
