Update From Kirkbymoorside Environment Group

Waste and Recycling. Our aim this coming year is to suggest yet more ways of reducing waste—better still, to help share ideas for bringing less waste home. We propose to campaign for manufacturers and distributors to use less packaging and move to plant-based materials.

Local Economy. Our local shops have been wonderful during 2020. In the coming year, we hope to find more ways to help and encourage our high-street to thrive.

Saving energy at home. We hope to be able to take bookings again next winter for KMEG’s Thermal Imaging Camera. The camera can show where heat is escaping or cold air being drawn in. Our aim is to help residents reduce heat loss and cut their energy bills—thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the Kirkby area.

Manor Vale Volunteer Work Group. We help maintain the wood and encourage the diversity of plant and animal life. We usually have three sessions a year: coppicing, hedge-laying, and haymaking on the top meadow to promote the wild flowers there.

Paths for everyone. KMEG has been selected for a “Bounce Forward” grant from the national Transition Network. This will really help us get moving, because we can use it for the design work for a shared path for everyone to cycle West from our town. We continue to work with Ryedale Cycle Forum (getryedalecycling.com).

Moorsbus. We are really hoping that we will be able to cut our travel footprint by sharing Moorsbus services again this summer, and that lots of people will join us for journeys into the National Park. Thanks to the Moorside Store and The Old Weigh for selling Moorsbus.org jam and marmalade, and to Summit Bakery for selling Moorsbus fruit cordials.

Food Group. We would like to help people trying to eat more local, organic food. Look up the ‘Fife diet’ on ‘Ted talks’ and let’s see if we can’t have something similar for Ryedale. It doesn’t have to be expensive! The idea is to have 90% of your diet locally sourced; say within 50 miles … and to enjoy it as a challenge, and a chance to revive local specialities.
