The Milton Rooms is waiting in the wings, ready to spring into action with an exciting new programme of events once the coronavirus restrictions allow.
Malton’s premier community and entertainment venue, which is run as a charitable company mainly by volunteers, has been working hard behind the scenes on refurbishing and refreshing the building ready to welcome the public back in.
There is a new and enthusiastic venue manager and board of trustees, who are looking to expand the Milton Rooms programme with a wide variety of acts as well as to allow for community use and hire for amateur performances.
The Milton Rooms managed to run several COVID-safe events with reduced audiences last autumn. In addition, various community groups were able to use the venue for socially-distanced activities; these include Kirkham Henry Performing Arts, Swinton Brass Band, and Ryedale District Council.
Since the pandemic began last April, the Milton Rooms’ income from events and hire fees has been severely reduced. In response, trustees have launched a ‘Keep the curtain up’ Go Fund Me appeal to raise money towards paying the substantial overheads—such as utility bills and heating and insurance costs—until the building can re-open. Ray King, Board of trustees chairman, said: “It costs a significant amount to maintain the Milton Rooms, and during the COVID-19 emergency we have been unable to run a full programme of events—and those we have been able to run have been with a limited audience. We are asking our local community to help support us. I do realise how difficult it is for everyone at the moment, but all help would be welcomed.”
Venue manager Lisa Rich said: “We were delighted to re-open our doors back in September, following nearly six months of closure, and received amazing feedback from our audiences. We welcomed back some familiar faces, such as Ryedale Blues Club and Craft & Chat, and worked with our community to assist local groups restart their events safely within our venue.
“However, we have since had to sadly close our doors once more. The Milton Rooms is a vital community hub and we are asking for support to help us to survive this most challenging of times. We look forward to welcoming our audiences and users back in the near future and are working on a diverse and dynamic programme of events for when we are able to re-open fully.
